During 15-18 June, statisticians from the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova (NBS) and Statistics Lithuania (the National Statistical Office of the Republic of Lithuania) met online to share their experience on the structure and functioning of their national statistical systems with a focus on the analysis of the legal frameworks that identify and regulate national statistical offices and other producers of official statistics in their countries. The event took place in the context of the NBS commitment to modernise the national statistical system of Moldova in line with fundamental principles of official statistics of UN and EU standards.
At the opening of the event, the NBS General Director Oleg Cara thanked the representatives of Statistics Lithuania for cooperation and advisory support provided to the Republic of Moldova: “NBS is currently focusing on the legal aspects related to strengthening statistical coordination at the country level and in particular on identifying all producers of official statistics in the Republic of Moldova. This is impossible to achieve without taking into account legal and operational aspects, related to the application of Law 93/2017 on official statistics, as well as the advanced experience of other European countries, such as Lithuania”, Oleg Cara noted.
In turn, Jūratė Petrauskienė, General Director of Statistics Lithuania, expressed the willingness and availability of the statistical Institution she represents to continue the successful cooperation of the Lithuanian experts with the colleagues from the Republic of Moldova.
Over the course of three days, several presentations were moderated by experts from the National Statistical Office of the Republic of Lithuania, followed by technical discussions between colleagues from the two statistical offices. Relevant contributions were provided by the project experts Sergiu Bozianu and Mike Hughes. During the discussions were covered such as topics as Lithuania’s national statistical system, coordination and cooperation of the Central Statistical Office with other producers of official statistics, criteria for identifying and agreeing with official statistical producers, statistical work program, methodologies and quality reports, dissemination and communication of statistics within the national statistical system etc.
